The Glutes

How I treat the Glutes

My treatments focus heavily on the nerve pathways that travel through the glutes and down the legs. Tightness throughout the glute muscles can place pressure on these surrounding structures, contributing to pain, stiffness and reduced mobility.

Using the outside edge of my forearm over a towel, I apply sustained 10-20 second deep trigger point therapy to each of the major glute muscles, including the Gluteus Maximus, Gluteus Medius and Gluteus Minimus. Holding these trigger points allows the muscles to gradually release, helping reduce tension and improve movement throughout the hips and legs.

One muscle I pay particular attention to is the Piriformis, a small but incredibly important muscle that sits deep within the glutes. Because the sciatic nerve passes close to this muscle, tightness or spasms in the Piriformis can press on the sciatic nerve and contribute to symptoms commonly associated with sciatica, including sharp or burning pain, numbness, tingling and pins and needles travelling down the leg.

I also apply sustained trigger point therapy to the Piriformis for 10–20 seconds at a time using firm and accurate pressure, which helps release deep muscular tension and often provides significant relief from sciatic-related discomfort.
